Technical specifications
At the point of use a PiXil consists of a touch-screen, connected to a custom computer with scope to feed additional TVs, Plasma screens or Projectors. The touch-screen provides access to video, audio and stills that are fed to the kiosk from the central server but held locally [on the computer’s hard disk] for instantaneous playback avoiding download times or streaming issues.
The content sent to any site is specifically targeted through a series of profiling options. For instance a youth club or primary school would never receive content that contained adult themes or subject matter, whereas material for a more mature audience would be available to a tertiary college or year twelve common room.
When work is added to the network it is profiled and rated to help it find its way to the most appropriate audience. Where a network connection is available the kiosks check in with the server during the networks least busy times and update the stored content as necessary.
Users can browse the available content listed by author name or title using the touch screen and select any piece for viewing, additional text is also available to find out more about the piece, its creator or any issues raised.
