SNAP Cardiff - Get Involved In Photography Project And Competition
ProMo-Cymru has received Cymorth funding via Ifanc to support a photography project aimed at collecting positive images of young people.
The aim of the project is to gather a library of suitable photographs of young people, scenarios, situations and locations. It also aims to ensure that young people from different communities and groups have equal representation through theSprout website via the use of positive imagery, while showcasing the talent of young people living in Cardiff.
The project consists of two parts:
SNAP Cardiff Photography Competition
A great chance for young people to show their skills and win excellent prizes. Finalists will be chosen by a panel including a professional photographer for each category with the overall winners of the competition chosen by a public vote on theSprout’s homepage poll.
Photography Sessions With Young People
Our team will be contacting and running photography workshops and studio sessions in youth centres around Cardiff.
If you would like to get involved contact Daria on 029 2046 2222 or email: darja@promo-cymru.org
theSprout
theSprout has been busier than ever this month, with submissions now being uploaded thick and fast. Remember, the site is completely interactive, so once registered anyone can upload a news story, feature, film review, gig preview, poem or anything you fancy spouting off about, all with images or a YouTube video. It is great, you should try it. 'Nuff said.
We are also looking for Welsh content, and we are working with the 20% Group at Plasmawr and Glantaf schools in organising an event to promote theSprout becoming bilingual.
If you are interested in writing for theSprout, contact the editor at ryan@theSprout.co.uk
CLIC is coming your way
CLIC has been busy getting in touch with local county areas via the Children and Young People’s Partnerships to:

So far, the county areas that have begun to develop or have a strong interest in developing their local CLIC sites are Rhondda Cynon Taf, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Blaenau Gwent, Pembroke, Flintshire, Angelsey, Torfaen, Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot.
Recently, we have been invited by Angelsey Children and Young People’s Partnership to their July event for young people to share more information on the CLIC project.
If you have not heard from us, please rest assured that we have not omitted you from this exciting new journey.
We are in the process of setting up visits to all Children and Young People’s Partnerships across Wales, so we will be contacting you very soon!
If you would like more information on how to become a part of CLIC, please email cindy@promo-cymru.org
CLIC visits YoungScot
CLIC was in Edinburgh in February to find out what YoungScot is offering young people as the National Youth Information and Citizenship Charity for Scotland.
Over at their offices in Haymarket, the CLIC team met with the key members of YoungScot and learnt how they manage their website, magazine and events, promote themselves and sustain the project.
It was an informative and inspiring experience for the team, who are currently redeveloping the CLIC site to deliver exciting content for young people across Wales.
Demonstrating Success
Our work with ARAD consultancy for the Welsh Assembly Government in the development of a ‘Demonstrating Success Toolkit’ continues, with us working directly with groups of young people in ensuring their views are given equal importance to the views of professionals in the developing project.
ARAD is working with a number of organisations and professionals across Wales to identify existing measurements and hear their suggestions. The group have so far devised a list of Draft Constructs, behaviours and indicators that indicate progression in young people’s skills and have then gone on to suggest four main methods that could be used in assessing and measuring young people’s progress.
We have met with groups of young people at each of these stages, firstly carrying out the same exercises in identifying what behaviours or developments they think indicate that young people are making progress. From these sessions our groups are trying out a few of the suggestions and we’ll be meeting them again in a few weeks to get their feedback and try out some of the methods as a group.
Newport Issue-based Videos
Over the past two months ProMo-Cymru has been working with Newport County Council and three groups of young people to produce issue-based videos. The videos are covering three topics: bullying and peer pressure, Internet safety and meeting up with strangers, and car crime and its consequences.
Led by the young people and their ideas, they chose the issues to be covered, put together storyboards and then we scripted and directed them acting out their chosen scenarios. All were involved in every aspect of production, including some camerawork and some of the initial editing process. The projects are now in their final stages.
A showcase event is being planned at the Riverfront in Newport for the young people to view their productions. They shall be inviting their family, friends and youth workers.
Youth Cultural Research
The research on Youth Cultural Activity is currently underway with questionnaires being made available online and in local Youth Centres.
The Cymorth/Ifanc funded research will capture what is presently available and work directly with young people aged 11-25 to develop a set of realistic suggestions to enhance cultural services and projects available to them in Cardiff.
Throughout March and April, focus groups have/will be taking place at local youth centres around the city. This will be a great chance for the young people of Cardiff to put their feelings and opinions across and let us know exactly how they feel about the opportunities that are being made available to them.
If you would like to get involved in one of our focus groups or you would like more information regarding the subject, then please email Pearce for more information regarding dates and locations of the upcoming sessions on pearce@promo-cymru.org
Ebbw Vale Institute News
Activities:
EVI hosts its first event, the Feeling Good Project (26/02/09)
There were lots of activities all day long, from belly dancing to tai-chi, free reflexology and massage treatments, and free healthy food and fruit smoothies were served. There were a number of organisations available to provide advice, including the Osteoporosis Society, Stroke Association, Adult Education, Arthritis Care, while Blaenau Gwent Leisure Service offered blood pressure and weight checks. It was a great turnout and everyone took part - it was great to see the building bustling with activity!
Local residents and organisations tell us their views on EVI (26/02/09)
Local residents and organisations were invited to EVI for an update on the refurbishment of the building and to discuss any potential issues people may have in relation to the licensing and planning applications submitted by ProMo-Cymru.
The general consensus is that EVI's refurbishment is in keeping with the original features, is attractive, a great use of the building and an excellent facility. The former caretaker, Jill Beddoe commented on how lovely the building looked thanks to all the refurbishment that has taken place, and would like to see youth centre activities for her grandchildren.
During the event, some local children popped in and we invited them to tell us what they would like to see at EVI. They would love to have climbing facilities, a cinema, painting classes and photography. Let’s see what we can do!
EVI in the media
A new environmental hot water transfer heating system is also due to be installed, which will reduce the building’s running costs by 50% and cut down emissions.

Young people invited to Get Ahead with London 2012
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today starts the search for a further ten school or college leavers aged between 16 and 18 to join the organisation.
The school leaver employment programme called Get Ahead will see the new recruits join the LOCOG workforce in August 2009. The successful candidates will take up placements in two different departments before taking up a permanent position.
Placements will be available across LOCOG, for example, with the Legal, Marketing, Communications, Venues, Sport, Culture, Education, Human Resources and Operations teams.
Paul Deighton, CEO of LOCOG said: "Working to help stage the London 2012 Games will undoubtedly give the successful young people an unrivalled start to their careers. We want the 2012 Games to inspire the youth of the world, so it is absolutely right that we employ young people to help us achieve this."
Get Ahead builds on a successful first round of school leaver recruitment undertaken in 2007. The scheme offers a competitive salary and the opportunity for the school leavers to achieve further qualifications that are relevant to the permanent position they take up.
The positions will be based at the headquarters of the London 2012 Organising Committee in Canary Wharf, London.
Candidates should go to www.london2012.com/getahead to find out more about the scheme and the application and assessment process. There they will also be able to read about the experiences of the some of the young people already on the team.
