Ebbw Vale Institute (EVI) Development
ProMo Cymru is about to embark on an ambitious journey to bring the Ebbw
Vale Institute back into use as a vibrant community space for cultural activities, learning and social enterprise for communities in Blaenau Gwent.
Traditionally the Ebbw Vale Institute (EVI) has since its inception in 1849 been a centre for information, education and entertainment for the benefit of the people and communities Ebbw Vale surrounds. We propose to build on this tradition and to modernise its activity base.
We propose to develop a strong partnership with Blaenau Gwent County Council, third sector bodies such as the Ebbw Vale development Trust and others, and interested individuals in order to develop a viable and sustainable building.
ProMo Cymru intends to build upon EVI’s heritage and develop a sustainable, working, exiting cultural and learning facility to have a positive social and economic impact on the people and environment of Ebbw Vale. We intend to provide:
- Community arts and music based activities and vibrant venue:
- Rehearsal spaces
- Café area
- Community meeting spaces
- Heritage projects
- Multi media facilities
- Video editing facilities & training
- Business development space
Steve Cranston is supporting ProMo-Cymru to complete a feasibility study and business plan to bring EVI back into life as a thriving cultural cluster in Blaenau Gwent. Steve, is joined by architect Geoff Cheason, who has extensive experience of regenerating listed buildings.
The EVI building is amazing - take a look at these 2 short clips - movie 1 and movie 2, and a short slideshow
Check out the ProMo - Cymru website www.promo-cymru.org, for an EVI blogger link for project progress updates we will be loading very soon.

The Sprout development
The Sprout website workshops have been developed to raise awareness of the website and to get young people involved in the Sprout, via secondary schools and youth clubs in the Cardiff area.
We have recently delivered several workshops in youth centres and secondary schools, the first in a line was Fitzalan High. During the workshops young people have a go at becoming reporters, they write a story and take photos which they upload straight onto the website themselves.
Feedback received so far has been very positive.
Any youth club or secondary school wanting to host a Sprout workshop, please contact:

Anti-Bullying week event - Cardiff's Got Young Talent
A talent showcase for young people was held in Cardiff aimed at promoting diversity and difference during Anti-Bullying Week (November 19 th- 23rd 2007)
"Being different in any way, is no reason for an individual to be bullied. Talent showcase in Liquid was a positive way of celebrating young people's differences and diversities and will hopefully help promote understanding and tolerance.”
Cardiff Against Bullying, Cardiff Council's anti-bullying team, had organised the Cardiff's Got Young Talent event in the Cardiffs Liquid nightclub. It was part of the weeklong activities to raise the profile of bullying issues and the initiatives in place to combat the problem.
JLD and Kristi performed at an under 18s disco in Liquid nightclub on Thursday November 22nd. Red Dragon Radio was there with one of their radio presenters, the street team and The Red Dragon Dancers. Other performers on the night were Pretty Green, Feedback and Ash football freestyler.
The event was a great success with positive feedback from the audience.
Electrovamp signed to a major label!
Electrovamp from Caerphilly, formally known as Kute, has just had two singles signed to Island Records, a part of Universal Music Group.
These ex-ProMo clients received a lot of support from Julian Gardner and have moved from an unknown pop band to a professional duo, now signed to a major label. Their first release – an electro house song “I Don’t Like the Vibe in the VIP” will be released on New Year Eve, 31st of December 2007. The music video is being played on MTV and other music channels now.
On Thursday 13th December, Marcus Simpson, ProMo Cymru's Development Officer, interviewed the girls on his regular weekly voluntary slot on Radio Cardiffs community radio station.

Kristi on the road...
Kristi has been actively promoting her album “I’m Just a Girl”. She performed live on BRFM 97.3 on 31th October, playing an acoustic set with another client of Promo – Cymru, Tom Power. She has also performed at various gigs around South Wales including an acoustic night at Bar Co in Swansea on 6th November, under-18s disco in Liquid, Cardiff and recently at The Point during ProMo Cymru’s X-Mas Showcase. She also had an opportunity to audition for the next episode of Britain’s Got Talent on 5th December. Fingers crossed for the results due after the New Year!
Her album has been also reviewed on the BBC Wales website and been played a few times on Jason Camilleri’s show on BBC Wales’ Radio Show.
“There's a wide range of styles on I'm Just A Girl, from the clean disco pop sheen of the title track (which recalls the 80s/90s turn of the decade with artists like Lisa Stansfield) to more grimy, almost hip hop beats. Then there are Prince-like funk flourishes too”
“The songs themselves are largely strong and confident from Kristi, and the choruses hit home as pop music should do. Kristi hits harder than many, and palpably possesses real talent.”

On November 22nd JLD performed for anti bullying week @ Liquid Nightclub with Red Dragon radio hosting the event. She performed a few tracks from her forthcoming album which included “Big On The Road”, “There’s No Us” and “Beatz & Bars”
She also did a gig for CWVYS @ The Senedd and has been booked for an interview in BBC Radio Wales on Wednesday, January 16th.
