Work Experience Owyn Davies
For the working week beginning 12 March, ACT client Owyn Davies, a student from Treorchy Comprehensive Sixth Form in the Rhondda Valleys, accompanied us.
Owyn was referred to us by the Careers Service and on work experience at ProMo as part of his academic studies for his A Levels in English Literature, Media Studies and Business Studies. He supported us around the office, helping organise car hire and train times for a company trip to Leicester and Caernarfon. Owyn is very interested in journalism as a career. He researched and wrote information on several of the client profiles which can be found on the website. Owyn also joined us for our fortnightly Monday morning meeting and also afterwards for a pub lunch across the road.
He analysed ProMail, improving the style and use of language so it would attract and reach out to the target audience – you – in the most effective way possible. He also researched and wrote for this very ProMail. We all enjoyed working with Owyn and he also “Enjoyed having an insight into the daily running of ProMo Cymru.”

Video for PiXil Cardiff
Save your film material from disappearing under a big layer of dust or rotting away in a corner of the attic! ProMo is collecting video/multi-media content of young people and youth organisations for a new project called PiXil Cardiff. We’ve developed a touch screen video jukebox that can hold more that 500 hours of content to display your work and this will be available at various youth centres and locations in Cardiff. The launch will provisionally take place on Tuesday 19th June at the Senedd building of the National Assembly of Wales.
If you have any material; video, music, issues, art and so on, that you would like to reach a wide and varied audience, please send us a copy. For more details call Emo or Marco at 029 2046 2222 or check out our website: http://www.promocymru.org/pixil.html This project is supported by Ifanc – Cardiff Young Peoples Partnership.
Young reporters needed
ProMo launches a new website – the Sprout – with the latest events, a database of services and the hottest local bands. Young people and organisations will be able to input info on events directly onto the site.
ProMo has consulted several groups of young people on the design and the content of the website and it is now mid construction, due for a launch date in June.
The new website, which is funded by Ifanc – Cardiff Young Peoples Partnership, will be maintained by young people, so this is your chance to get involved. Working for the website will offer you the opportunity to learn how the site has been constructed, and ProMo can even offer you training in web design, reporting, photographs and videos.
If you’re interested in being part of the editorial team, drop us a line at maaike@promocymru.org or call 02920 462 222!
Your Voice Your Choice workshops
To inspire young people to become actively involved in decision-making, ProMo Cymru helped setting up the Your Voice Your Choice workshop. It provides information on where and how young people can become involved in youth forums and school’s councils. Funded by the National Assembly for Wales and ESF, the project is a partnership between ProMo Cymru and Working Word PR.
Delivering across Wales, the project facilitates young people’s participation from a broad range of social backgrounds and abilities.
Workshops have so far already been a great success in Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouth areas and Gilfach Goch.
If you would like to discuss the free workshops please contact Marco on 029 2046 2222 or email marco@promocymru.org
Documentary Ely Event
ProMo is making a mini-documentary for the North Ely Community Centre in Cardiff. It shows how young people from the area expressed their creativity in some imposing ways at their cultural event early March. The groups of (break) dancers amazed the audience by putting on an explosive show. Some stirring videos of life in Ely were presented and the extraordinary performances of the bands, singers and mc’s proved that Ely is packed with talent.
Summer event Abertillery
There’s more news about Abertillery as ProMo is working on Yett in the Park, an outdour summer youth event in the Communities First area. The festival takes place in July and the themes are music, sports and healthy living. ProMo will help with delivering client bands, workshops, staging and PA. More news will follow in the next months.
Label for Robert Westall’s EP
As his recordings are nearly completed, ProMo client Robert Westall is looking for a small label to release his acoustic EP. He’s collaborating with two other ProMo clients: bassist Chris Lewis and Patrick Patrickious, who’s playing with Jamelia and Coolio and has said to lay the drums down for Robert’s album. He’d like to release the EP this spring or summer.
Live events Cardiff
ProMo Cymru is going to organise live events throughout Cardiff with music manager/ promoter Dominico Scarpeta and Patrick Patrickious. We’ll set up some client showcases together, in Buffalo Bar and The Point. We’re also going to organise a Fringe Festival in November, together with BRfm radio. Keep your eyes open for more news in upcoming ProMail issues.
