Cyfartal

ProMo Cymru, Disability Arts Cymru and South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) have joined Arts Training Wales in a new initiative to look at setting up apprenticeships, fellowships, work placements and/or other schemes for people who are currently under-represented in the arts workforce. The partnership will be known as Cyfartal (Equal).

The ultimate aim is to set up professional development opportunities to better enable people from minority groups to join the arts workforce. The Cyfartal partnership aspires to research and test schemes in Wales that might form the basis of a future European funding bid.

Currently ProMo-Cymru is planning visits to other cultural organisations throughout the UK to share knowledge and visions. First up are Toxteth TV in Liverpool, WAC Performing Arts and Media College, College Arts and Connections Communication Centre in London.

JLDNew album JLD

Rapper JLD, who’s been a ProMo client for more than 3 years and has already made a big reputation as a live MC, just started recording her new album at the ProMo Cymru studios. JLD is supported by the ACT, Objective 1 project. The release should be early this summer, to coincide with her finishing school when she can devote more time to realising her musical ambitions. Since ProMo started working with JLD she has recorded a music video, performed on BBC 1Xtra, Radio 1, BBC Wales and Beats FM. Recently she got together with Cardiff chicas Pretty Green, to record and perform the song ‘Sex Machine’.

Cardiff recordings started

MicrophoneThe first recordings of our new music project in Cardiff are underway! Client Development Officer Marcus Simpson set up a studio at the Pavillion Youth Club in Butetown. ProMo is looking to work with young people from Adamsdown, Butetown, Caerau, Ely, Grangetown, Llanrumney, Riverside and Splott to provide them access to music facilities. We will support 5 young bands (on average 4 young people per band) and 10 individuals in producing their music. This will result in the recording and production of a promotional CD for the artists. So if you are a singer or play in a band from one of the areas mentioned above, this could be a great opportunity for you! Contact marcus@promocymru.org or 02920 437 233. This project is funded by Ifanc – Cardiff Young Peoples Partnership.

Young reporters needed!

You’re young and you wanna know what Cardiff has to offer you. But where do you look? The Sprout!

ProMo launches a new website in March – the Sprout – with the latest events, a database of services and the hottest local bands. Young people and organisations will be able to input info on events directly onto the site.

The new website, which is funded by Ifanc – Cardiff Young Peoples Partnership, will be maintained by young people, so this is your chance to get involved! Working for the website will offer you the opportunity to learn how the site has been structured and created, and ProMo can even offer you training in web design, reporting, photographs and videos.

If you’re interested in being part of the editorial team, drop us a line at maaike@promocymru.org or call 02920 462222.

Benefits and Young People

The rules covering benefits for young people are often completely different from those for over 18s. Young people, desperately in need of advice, often fall through the gaps in the system and in advisers' knowledge. This course is a step towards rectifying that. Some examples of topics that will be discussed are the eligibility conditions young people face, how to advise them to make a valid claim, the importance of accessing other money and housing benefit restrictions for young people.
Friday 16th March OR Saturday 17th March 2007 (you only need to choose one date!) 9.30am – 4.30pm at R & R consulting Centres, Heath, Cardiff.

For more information please contact Matthew Parry at MParry@cardiff.gov.uk or tel 02920 872208.
